The New York Rangers are positioning themselves as strong contenders for the Stanley Cup this season, and a potential trade could enhance their defensive lineup.

According to PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool, a proposed deal would send Alex Vlasic from the Chicago Blackhawks to the Rangers in exchange for Ryan Lindgren, Brennan Othmann, Kalle Vaisanen, a sixth-round pick in 2025, and a fifth-round pick in 2026.

Vlasic, a promising 23-year-old defenseman entering the first year of his six-year, $27.6 million contract, scored 16 points (2 goals, 14 assists) in 76 games last season. He could play a key role in the Rangers’ defense, especially if Jacob Trouba is traded.

In return, the Rangers would part with Lindgren, a 26-year-old defenseman who tallied 17 points in 76 games last season, along with two prospects. Othmann, the 16th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, has played three NHL games without scoring but had an impressive 49 points in 67 AHL games. Vaisanen, selected 106th overall in 2021, recorded no points in three AHL games last season.

Rangers GM Chris Drury recognizes the urgency to win, given the team’s recent playoff successes without a Stanley Cup. He remains optimistic about the upcoming season and has confidence in head coach Peter Laviolette as they aim for another playoff run.

Meanwhile, the Chicago Blackhawks have named veteran forward Nick Foligno as their new captain. Foligno, who recently signed a two-year, $9 million extension, expressed his appreciation for the chance to lead the team during this crucial phase of its development.
