The Cleveland Browns have reunited with receiver James Proche II following the trade of Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills. This move leaves a significant gap in the Browns’ receiving corps, as Cooper has been their leading receiver since joining the team in 2022.

During his time with Cleveland, Cooper accumulated 2,660 yards and 16 touchdowns over 38 games. In exchange for him, the Browns received a 2025 third-round pick and a 2026 seventh-round pick. Despite his contributions, Cooper had a sluggish start to this season, recording just 24 catches for 250 yards and two touchdowns in six games.

With Cooper gone, Jerry Jeudy, who was acquired in March, is set to take over as the No. 1 wide receiver. Jeudy has developed a promising rapport with quarterback Deshaun Watson, having made 20 receptions for 248 yards and one touchdown so far this season.

The Browns’ lack of depth at receiver prompted them to bring back Proche to the practice squad. He has appeared in 14 games for Cleveland over the past two seasons, although his offensive snaps have been limited. Proche has primarily been utilized as a return specialist.

Rookie Jamari Thrash is also expected to see an uptick in playing time following Cooper’s departure. The Browns are looking to shake up their struggling offense, which ranks last in the league in yards per game.

The team currently holds a disappointing record of 1-5, with their offensive issues well-documented. The Browns’ performance in major offensive categories has been subpar, underscoring the need for changes.

In contrast, the Bills are welcoming Cooper into their offense, which is led by Pro Bowl quarterback Josh Allen. Buffalo stands at 4-2 but has been searching for a reliable top receiver after trading Stefon Diggs this offseason.

Head coach Sean McDermott expressed optimism about integrating Cooper into the team, emphasizing the importance of his ability to contribute. He acknowledged the respect the team has for Cooper’s skills and looks forward to seeing how quickly he can adapt.

Buffalo’s upcoming game against the struggling Tennessee Titans provides Cooper with an opportunity to settle in with his new team. Meanwhile, the Browns prepare to face the Cincinnati Bengals in a crucial AFC North matchup.

The decision to trade Cooper had been anticipated, as his name frequently surfaced in trade discussions leading up to the move. He was part of a proposed trade package for the 49ers’ star receiver, Brandon Aiyuk.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry acknowledged Cooper’s contributions in a statement, expressing gratitude for his professionalism during his time with the team. As the Browns look to rebound, they also hope to see a boost from the anticipated return of star running back Nick Chubb.
