The Green Bay Packers, established in 1919, are one of the oldest franchises in professional sports, particularly in the NFL. Unlike most teams, the Packers are unique in that they are owned by the community rather than a traditional owner.

Occasionally, the Packers sell stock to fans, which helps finance stadium renovations and other projects around Lambeau Field. Stockholders are invited to an annual meeting where they receive updates from the CEO and Board of Directors about the team’s status.

The bond between the Packers and their fans is exceptional. While many teams have dedicated supporters, the connection between Green Bay and its community is particularly strong, enriched by numerous stories of player-fan interactions and local traditions.

One beloved tradition is the Green Bay Packers Fence, adorned with murals created by local artists. These murals change annually and are located on homes across from Lambeau Field, making them a significant part of the game-day experience.

Artist Zane Statz, who has played a pivotal role in this tradition, discussed the origin of the Packers fence murals. After graduating from St. Norbert College, Statz was approached by a homeowner in Green Bay who wanted to commission a mural, marking the beginning of this community art project.

For years, Statz painted one fence on Shadow Lane before passing the project to his assistant. He now paints a different fence on the same street, inviting community members to help him with the process.

The fences are easily visible from Lombardi Avenue, making them a staple for anyone heading to the stadium. Statz leaves his design up for the entire season and chooses themes based on the team’s culture and season predictions.

Statz shared that he often waits until closer to the season to finalize his designs, considering factors like roster changes and injuries. His most memorable murals include the community-themed piece from 2020, this year’s mural, and his first one.

During the pandemic in 2020, when fans were barred from attending games, Statz allowed supporters to purchase a place for their likeness on the fence, raising $12,000 for COVID relief charities.

In addition to the fence murals, Statz also designs custom cleats for Packers players as part of the “My Cause, My Cleats” initiative. This year, he created cleats for wide receiver Romeo Doubs in support of Tricia’s Troops.
