A medic from Welshpool, Simon Cartwright, recently undertook a significant challenge to raise funds for the Wales Air Ambulance charity by completing the Ironman Wales event, a demanding 140-mile triathlon.
As a critical care practitioner, Simon participated in this grueling competition, which included a 2.4-mile sea swim, a 112-mile bike ride through hilly terrain, and a marathon run through Tenby.
He was joined by fellow critical care practitioners Caroline Arter, Ruby Thomas, and Mike Palmer. Together, they managed to raise an impressive £8,500 for the Wales Air Ambulance.
Reflecting on the experience, Simon shared, “It was an incredible experience; one I will never forget. The support from the public was overwhelming. Hearing people say, ‘Simon, you are an Ironman’ will stay with me forever.”
He noted that taking on this challenge alongside his colleagues was a unique opportunity, highlighting the camaraderie among them. Despite their demanding 12-hour shifts and personal commitments, they managed to train and achieve their fundraising goal.
However, the challenge proved tough for all participants. Ruby faced harsh conditions during the swim and was pulled from the bike course after 80 miles due to time constraints. Caz completed the bike portion but missed the cut-off for the marathon by just two minutes.
In contrast, Simon completed the Ironman in a commendable 12 hours and 24 minutes, followed by Mike who finished in 14 hours and 17 minutes.
Dr. Sue Barnes, Chief Executive of Wales Air Ambulance, praised the dedication required to take on such a challenge. She expressed pride in the team for their commitment and fundraising efforts.
Simon’s accomplishment is particularly notable given his background in critical care, as this type of endurance event is vastly different from his day job of saving lives.
The funds raised will significantly benefit the Wales Air Ambulance, reflecting the medics’ commitment to their charity and the community.
Overall, the effort and determination displayed by Simon and his colleagues highlight the spirit of teamwork and dedication in both their professional and personal endeavors.
