The New York Rangers are facing a pause in contract extension talks with 22-year-old forward Alexis Lafrenière. Despite coming off a career-best 57-point season, Lafrenière is set to become a restricted free agent after this season. Rangers general manager Chris Drury emphasized his commitment to keeping Lafrenière long-term during a training camp media session on September 17, but did not delve into details about contract negotiations.
“I’m not going to discuss any private discussions or negotiations,” Drury stated. “Lafrenière is a crucial young asset for our team, not just due to where we drafted him but because he continues to improve.”
Reports indicate that both Lafrenière and his representatives have agreed to postpone extension talks until next summer, believing that another strong season will position him for a more lucrative contract. “Unless there’s an exceptional offer, Lafrenière will wait until after the season,” said USA Today’s Vince Mercogliano.
Lafrenière is focused on building on his performance, aiming to surpass his previous totals of 28 goals and 29 assists. He also contributed significantly in the playoffs last season, scoring 14 points in 16 games.
