Monica McNutt, former Georgetown star and current ESPN basketball analyst, has found herself in hot water once again. This time, the criticism is coming from Caitlin Clark’s enthusiastic fanbase, following McNutt’s recent comments on ESPN’s “Around the Horn.”
During the show, McNutt acknowledged the impressive performance of Clark and the Indiana Fever, particularly highlighting the team’s recent success and Clark’s Player of the Month honors for August. She praised head coach Christie Sides and noted Clark’s role in the Fever’s turnaround.
“This is huge for this franchise,” McNutt said. “They are obviously moving in the right direction. You gotta give [head coach] Christie Sides some credit because people were ready to fire her three games [ago]. Of course, you’re going to give Caitlin Clark credit because she’s been spectacular and exceeded expectations.”
However, McNutt’s comments took a turn when she quantified Clark’s contribution. She estimated that Clark deserved around 60 percent of the credit for the Fever’s success, which did not sit well with some fans. McNutt’s earlier pick of Angel Reese for Rookie of the Year seems to have added fuel to the fire of criticism.
The backlash on social media was swift and intense. Fans took to various platforms to voice their discontent:
- “Interesting switch up 😂😂😂😂😂” commented one user, pointing out the apparent change in McNutt’s stance.
- “Did anyone ask McNutt’s ROTY pick…where is that update?” asked another, referencing McNutt’s previous support for Reese.
- “She got downgraded lmaooo. From First Take to Around the Horn who nobody watches,” read a tweet questioning McNutt’s credibility.
- “McNothing good to say,” expressed one fan, dismissing McNutt’s insights.
- “Monica McNutt needs glasses,” read another, criticizing her judgment.
- “@ESPN if you care about women’s basketball, it would be smart to get rid of all WNBA talking heads. No one can stand Monica McNutt,” demanded a particularly frustrated Clark supporter.
McNutt’s role as an analyst and her public opinions are always under scrutiny, and her comments about Clark and the Fever have clearly stirred a passionate reaction. As Clark and the Fever continue to make headlines, McNutt’s observations will likely remain a point of contention among fans.
