The Los Angeles Lakers are determined to bounce back from a lackluster 2023-24 season. The team has already begun revamping its approach, including hiring JJ Redick as the new head coach and focusing more on player development. However, for a successful 2024-25 season, the Lakers need to implement three crucial adjustments to their strategy.
Firstly, the Lakers must significantly increase their reliance on the three-point shot. Although they finished 8th in the NBA for three-point shooting percentage last season, they ranked a disappointing 28th in attempts. This disconnect between shooting efficiency and attempt frequency was a major issue. Redick has emphasized a more three-point-centric approach, which could help the Lakers capitalize on their shooting strengths, improve offensive spacing, and reduce the physical demands on stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Secondly, Rui Hachimura needs to be promoted to the starting lineup. The Lakers’ record with Hachimura as a starter was notably better than when he came off the bench. During the 2023-24 season, Hachimura averaged 15.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game as a starter, showing higher efficiency compared to his reserve role. With a 26-13 record in games he started, versus 14-15 when he did not, making Hachimura a starter could significantly enhance the Lakers’ performance.
Thirdly, it is crucial for the Lakers to allow their young players to gain experience by playing through their struggles. The team has invested in promising young talents like Bronny James, Max Christie, Jalen Hood-Schifino, Dalton Knecht, and Maxwell Lewis. Yet, these players have had limited opportunities on the court. For instance, Christie played only 14.1 minutes per game last season, while Hood-Schifino and Lewis saw even less action. Giving these young players more playing time and the chance to develop through their mistakes will be vital for the team’s long-term success.
By increasing their three-point attempts, integrating Hachimura into the starting lineup, and providing young players with more opportunities, the Lakers can address their previous shortcomings and build a more competitive team for the upcoming season. Embracing these changes could pave the way for a more successful and sustainable future for the franchise.
