The New York Knicks will have to contend with Joel Embiid in a Philadelphia 76ers jersey for the foreseeable future. On Friday, the 76ers announced a three-year, $193 million maximum extension for Embiid, which includes a player option for the 2028–29 season.
This substantial contract will pay Embiid $59.5 million in the first year, with annual increases to $64.3 million and $69 million in the final year. Given Embiid’s status as one of the best players in the NBA, the 76ers are committed to him.
Embiid’s Impressive 2024 Season
Last season, Embiid played just 39 regular-season games, but he made a significant impact, averaging 34.7 points, 11 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game with a .529 shooting percentage. Although injuries affected his season, he played at least 66 games the previous year, proving his dominance on the court.
In the playoffs against the Knicks, despite struggling with injuries, Embiid averaged 33 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 5.7 assists over six games, playing more than 41 minutes per contest. Unfortunately for the 76ers, they were eliminated in the postseason.
76ers Strengthen Roster with Paul George
This offseason, the 76ers made key moves, parting ways with Tobias Harris while adding Paul George. Coming from a Clippers team that didn’t meet expectations in the playoffs, George will be a vital third scorer for the 76ers. Last season, he played 74 games—his highest total since 2018—and made the All-Star team, averaging 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists.
These changes make the 76ers a formidable opponent for any team.
Knicks Boost Defensive Capabilities
In response to the strengthening of rivals like the 76ers, the Knicks have focused on defensive upgrades this offseason. They extended OG Anunoby on a lucrative $42 million per season deal and acquired Mikal Bridges, adding elite defensive talent to their roster. These acquisitions aim to counteract the offensive threats posed by teams like the 76ers.
Concerns at Center Position for Knicks
While the Knicks have bolstered their perimeter defense, they still face challenges at the center position. Julius Randle is not seen as a long-term solution at the five, especially with Mitchell Robinson, the starting center, expected to miss most or all of training camp.
President Leon Rose and the front office have taken a cautious approach to address this need, but the lack of depth at center could become a significant issue as the season unfolds.
Looking Ahead for the Knicks
As the 76ers continue to build around Embiid and now Paul George, the Knicks must remain competitive in a tough Eastern Conference. Strengthening their defense is a good start, but resolving their center depth will be crucial for playoff success against teams like the 76ers.
The Knicks are now focused on maximizing their roster’s potential, and the upcoming months will be critical in determining whether they are ready to contend for a championship.
