The Green Bay Packers are making some significant adjustments as they prepare for their Week 2 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. Jordan Love, the team’s starting quarterback, is sidelined with a sprained MCL suffered in their recent game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Packers have decided to turn to backup QB Malik Willis for the upcoming game at Lambeau Field.
Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported on September 8 that Willis will get the starting nod. Love’s injury, described as a grade 1 or 2 sprained MCL, is expected to keep him out for approximately 2-4 weeks. Glazer indicated that while the injury is serious, it could have been worse, noting that it is not an ACL tear. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has emphasized a conservative approach to Love’s recovery to ensure his full return.
Willis, who was acquired from the Tennessee Titans just 13 days ago, has had limited action with the Packers so far. In Week 1, he saw only two plays—one incomplete pass and one sack by the Eagles defense. Despite his limited exposure with Green Bay, Willis brings some experience to the table. Over his 12 career appearances and three starts, he has completed 52.2% of his passes for 350 yards with 3 interceptions. He also has 32 rushing attempts for 144 yards and one touchdown.
With Willis stepping in as the starter, practice squad quarterback Sean Clifford, who was drafted by the Packers in 2023, will likely serve as his backup. Clifford has yet to attempt a pass in his NFL career, having appeared in two games without any recorded attempts.
As the Packers navigate this period without Love, they might also explore trade or free agency options to bolster their quarterback depth. For now, Willis will have the opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities as he leads the team against the Colts next Sunday.
