Georgia is set to face a significant challenge in their season opener against Clemson this Saturday, as the Bulldogs will likely be without one of their star players. Running back Trevor Etienne, who transferred from Florida, is expected to be suspended for the high-profile matchup. This decision follows Etienne’s March arrest, which led to DUI and reckless driving charges. Although the DUI charge was dismissed as part of a plea deal, Etienne was found guilty of reckless driving and other violations, including underage possession of alcohol and failure to maintain lane.
Etienne, the younger sibling of former Clemson running back Travis Etienne, was anticipated to be a key player for Georgia this season. He had a strong track record at Florida, rushing for 1,458 yards over the past two seasons, including 753 yards last year and nine total touchdowns. As the No. 3 running back transfer of the 2024 offseason, Etienne was expected to be a significant asset for the Bulldogs.
In addition to Etienne’s suspension, Georgia will also be without Roderick Robinson, their top returning rusher. Robinson is recovering from toe surgery and has been labeled as “week to week” by head coach Kirby Smart. Robinson contributed 196 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries last season, making his absence even more impactful.
With both Etienne and Robinson unavailable, Georgia will rely on younger and less experienced running backs for the game. Sophomore Branson Robinson and freshman Nate Frazier are the primary candidates to step up. Branson Robinson, who missed the entirety of last season due to a knee injury, rushed for 330 yards in his freshman year and has shown promise during fall camp. Meanwhile, Nate Frazier, a highly-regarded freshman, was ranked as the No. 2 running back prospect in the 2024 recruiting class and has impressed with his performance thus far.
