Skyler Brind’Amour, drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the sixth round of the 2017 NHL Draft, is set to leave the organization as a free agent. Reports indicate that he will sign an NHL contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he will be coached by his father, Rod Brind’Amour, a legendary player and current coach.

After being drafted, Skyler chose to pursue four years at Quinnipiac University instead of signing with the Oilers. He later signed an AHL deal with the Charlotte Checkers but struggled last season, recording just 3 goals and 8 points in 54 games.

At 25 years old, it is surprising that the Hurricanes would offer him an NHL contract given his limited success in the AHL. However, it seems Carolina believes that playing under his father will help unlock his potential and that his skills could translate better to the NHL level.

Rod Brind’Amour has been one of the most prominent coaches in the league, leading the Hurricanes to a 278-130-44 record over the past six years. A former NHL player himself, Rod is known for his intensity and physical fitness, traits he has likely instilled in his coaching style. He won a Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006, as well as two Selke trophies during his career.

While it’s disappointing for the Oilers to see a drafted player not sign with them, it appears they won’t be significantly affected by Skyler’s departure. The move seems to be a long-awaited opportunity for the father-son duo to work together.

As the season unfolds, it will be intriguing to follow Skyler Brind’Amour’s journey with the Hurricanes and see if Rod can bring out the best in him. This storyline could add an interesting dynamic to the upcoming NHL season.
