The Boston Bruins officially launched their 2024-25 season with a press conference led by general manager Don Sweeney on the opening day of training camp at Warrior Ice Arena on Wednesday.

During the press conference, Sweeney discussed ongoing contract negotiations with restricted free agent goaltenders before shifting the conversation to the roster and highlighting players competing for a spot on the team.

Among those players is last year’s standout rookie, Matthew Poitras, who had his first professional season cut short due to right shoulder surgery on February 7, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season and playoffs.

Sweeney expressed enthusiasm about Poitras’ return, stating, “He’s fully cleared and we’re excited to have him back.” He mentioned that Poitras would be playing both center and wing during training camp.

Before his injury, Poitras had been performing impressively, and Sweeney noted that he was on track to remain with the team. This year, they are considering various options, including potential games in Providence.

Poitras aims to secure a spot on the Bruins and pick up where he left off, though Sweeney acknowledged that it might take time for him to regain his rhythm, highlighting that there’s ample time in camp.

In addition to team practices, the Bruins will participate in seven preseason games and hold the Black and Gold game in Providence, which will feature the entire training camp roster.

Sweeney emphasized that the upcoming weeks of extensive playing time for Poitras and other prospects like Georgii Merkulov and Fabian Lysell will be crucial in determining their readiness for the NHL.

“There’s plenty of opportunity to see if they’re prepared for the demands of the NHL and to make the team,” Sweeney stated, underscoring the importance of this evaluation period.

On-ice practices for the Bruins are set to begin at 10 a.m. ET on Thursday at Warrior Ice Arena, marking the start of a busy training camp schedule.

The Bruins’ first preseason game will be against the New York Rangers, taking place at TD Garden on Sunday at 5 p.m., adding to the excitement of the upcoming season.

Overall, the Bruins are optimistic about the upcoming season and the potential contributions of returning players like Poitras, as well as the development of their young prospects.
