In a surprising shift, the Carolina Panthers have decided to bench second-year quarterback Bryce Young, opting to start veteran Andy Dalton instead. The move comes after a rough start to the season, with the Panthers dropping their first two games by a combined score of 73-13.

Just hours before announcing the change, Panthers coach Dave Canales had expressed confidence in Young, stating after the team’s 26-3 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, “Bryce is our quarterback. We’re going to shore up the things we need to offensively, from a scheme standpoint, all those things. These are all valuable reps.”

However, the Panthers’ decision to turn to Dalton indicates a shift in strategy. Young, the former No. 1 overall pick out of Alabama, has struggled with a 2-16 record and poor performance stats. This season, he has completed 31 of 56 passes for 245 yards, with three interceptions and six sacks. The change appears aimed at addressing both his performance issues and protecting his well-being.

Dalton, 36, will step in as the starter. Known for his long tenure with the Cincinnati Bengals and his time as a backup with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, Dalton brings a wealth of experience. He has played 14 NFL seasons, with a notable run as a starter for the Bengals from 2011 to 2019. While he may not be a long-term solution, Dalton’s experience could provide the stability the Panthers need in the short term.

The Panthers are hoping that Dalton’s leadership and experience will help turn their season around as they face mounting pressure to improve their performance.
